Musicians Institute offers three types of scholarships designed to provide tuition assistance to students during their enrollment at MI. The information below describes each scholarship, how to apply, and the deadline for submission. Refer to each scholarship application for specific details; for all additional questions about scholarships, please contact the Admissions Department.

General Information for All MI Scholarships
Scholarship Amounts and Method of Award
- Scholarships are awarded in the form of tuition credit only.
- The total award amount will be determined after a review of your application.
- The total award amount is divided by the number of quarters in your program and credited equally toward each quarter's tuition (except MI Hardship Scholarship; which is a one-time award).
Application and Notification
- MI Scholarships are available only to newly-enrolling students. Before you may submit a scholarship application, you must have a Letter of Acceptance from MI’s Admission Department.
- Scholarship applications are available from the Financial Aid or Admissions Department or by download from this site.
- Completed applications submitted by the appropriate deadline will be reviewed and applicants will be notified of the results within two weeks after the deadline.
Other Information
- All scholarships are non-transferable and may not be applied to any person, program, or start date other than those for which they were originally awarded.
- Scholarship recipients who fail to meet minimum academic requirements during their enrollment will forfeit any remaining award balance (see scholarship applications for specific requirements).

Development Scholarship
Development Scholarships are provided to encourage the educational growth of new students enrolled in a degree or certificate program who have verifiable financial need (this scholarship is limited to US citizens and permanent residents). A minimum of twenty Development Scholarships are awarded each year.
Eligibility
To be considered for a Development Scholarship, you must submit a completed application including:
- A 250-word essay explaining why you should be considered for the scholarship and describing the extent of your financial need.
- A copy of your official high school or college transcript.
- Verifiable financial need (tax return or other means of income verification).

Musicianship Scholarship
Musicianship Scholarships are available to new instrument and vocals students (both US and non-US citizens) enrolling in the Bachelor of Music, Associate of Arts, or Certificate in Performance Programs who demonstrate outstanding musicianship. A total of ten Musicianship Scholarships (two per instrument) are awarded for each new program start. The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in performance (instrument and vocals) programs only, and may not be transferred to “non-performance program” emphases ( Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA or Bachelor degree.
Eligibility
To be considered for a Musicianship Scholarship, you must submit a completed application including:
- An essay explaining why you should be considered for the scholarship.
- A video recording displaying your performing skills. Video requirements vary by program; see application for details.

Hardship Scholarship
The MI Hardship Scholarship is awarded to qualified applicants who are currently enrolled in MI Certificate, AA Degree, or BM Degree programs and is based on verifiable financial need, current academic standing, and essay submission.
Eligibility
To be considered for the MI Hardship Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be currently enrolled in any MI Certificate, AA Degree, or BM Degree program.
- Complete an MI Hardship Scholarship application (see application download instructions below). Eligibility is determined by a combination of demonstrated financial need, academic standing (minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75) and the quality and content of the scholarship essay (described below).
- Submit a 250 word essay explaining why you should be considered for the MI Hardship Scholarship. Include your goals, financial situation (including the amount of tuition credit requested), and any other factors you consider relevant.
Award
- Tuition credit is applied to the current quarter based on student need and available funds on a first-come, first-served basis as a one-time award.
Application deadline
Applications are accepted at any time during a student’s enrollment. There is no deadline for application.

Independent Artist Scholarship
Independent Artist Scholarships are available to applicants (both US and non-US citizens) enrolling in the Artist Certificate Program who demonstrate outstanding talent.
Eligibility
To be considered for the Independent Artist Scholarship, you must submit a completed application including:
- An audio recording containing the songs that you submitted with your original application to the program plus at least two and up to five more (formats accepted: Audio CD, AIFF, WAV, mp3, AAC).
- A detailed credit list for all songs submitted including who performed on each instrument, who engineered, and who produced.
- If you are the author of any lyrics performed or submitted with this application, include a lyric sheet for each song.
- A 1-2 page essay describing your short and long-term career objectives. Include specific information about how you plan to meet your objectives.
In addition to the requirements above, submit ONLY ONE of the following three items:
- A video recording containing a minimum of 2 original songs in a solo performance or in a band/ensemble setting (formats accepted: DVD, quicktime /.mov, mpeg, VHS).
- Complete multi-track audio files of two original recordings (these may be the same songs submitted above) Formats accepted: Apple Logic, Pro Tools, Steinberg Cubase, Ableton Live, bounced individual audio files).
- A video recording of less than 15 minutes documenting your writing/creative process (formats accepted: DVD, quicktime /.mov, mpeg, VHS).

The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the Guitar performance program only, and may not be transferred to “non-performance program” emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA degree.
Eligibility
To be considered for an ESP Guitar Scholarship, you must take the following steps:
- Complete an ESP Guitar Scholarship application (see application download instructions below).
- Submit a video recording (DVD format only) of you performing three (3) diverse songs (in any style within the Rock genre) on your instrument. It is recommended that this include two (2) live ensemble (band or duo) performances, and one (1) solo piece. You may use electric and/or acoustic guitars.
Award
- Tuition credit of $2,000.00 ($1,000.00 per quarter for the first two quarters of the program as long as the recipient maintains satisfactory progress)
- A new ESP guitar

The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the Guitar performance program only, and may not be transferred to “non-performance program” emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA degree.
Eligibility
To be considered for an ESP Acoustic Guitar Scholarship, you must take the following steps:
- Complete an ESP Acoustic Guitar Scholarship application (see application download instructions below).
- Submit a video recording (DVD format only) of you performing two (2) diverse songs (in any genre) on the acoustic guitar.
- It is recommended that this include one (1) live ensemble (band or duo) performances, and one (1) solo piece.
Award
- Tuition credit of $2,000.00 ($1,000.00 per quarter for the first two quarters of the program as long as the recipient maintains satisfactory progress)
- A new ESP Acoustic-Electric guitar

The Schecter Synyster Gates Guitar Scholarship, sponsored by Schecter Guitar Research, is awarded each Fall to a student enrolling in the Associate of Arts in Performance (Guitar) program (US or non-US citizen) who demonstrates outstanding musicianship in the Heavy Rock or Metal genre. The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the Guitar performance program only, and may not be transferred to “non-performance program” emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA degree.
Eligibility
To be considered for the Schecter Synyster Gates Guitar Scholarship, you must take the following steps:
- Complete the Schecter Synyster Gates Guitar Scholarship application (see application download instructions below).
- Submit a video recording (DVD format only) of you performing three (3) diverse songs on your guitar within the Heavy Rock or Metal genre. It is recommended that this include two (2) live ensemble (band or duo) performances, and one (1) solo piece.

The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the Guitar performance program only, and may not be transferred to “non-performance program” emphases ( Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA degree.

To be considered for a D'Addario Guitar Scholarship, you must take the following steps:
- Complete a D'Addario Guitar Scholarship application (see application download instructions below).

W. Crane Guy Memorial Vocal Scholarship
The W. Crane Guy Memorial Vocal Scholarship was created to honor the memory, multiple talents and artistic career of MI alumnus W. Crane Guy (class of 2010) ; and is provided to encourage and support the educational growth of a newly enrolling Vocal Program student.
The scholarship will be awarded in Spring 2012 to a new student (US or non-US citizens) enrolling in the Associate of Arts in Performance (Vocal) program who demonstrates overall outstanding musicianship, and the potential for developing their own unique voice in any style.
Preference will be given to veterans, but this is not required for eligibility.
The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the AA Vocal performance program only, and may not be transferred to “non- performance program” emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA degree.
Award
$2,000.00 tuition credit ($1,000.00 per quarter for the first two consecutive quarters of the program as long as the recipient maintains satisfactory progress).
Eligibility and Conditions
Newly-enrolled AA (Vocal) students only. US citizen and non-US citizen. Failure to maintain enrollment and satisfactory academic progress in AA (Vocal) program for the full duration of the scholarship may result in withdrawal of the award.

Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation (HCCCF) Vocal Scholarships
The HCCCF Vocal Scholarships are generously sponsored by The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation, and are provided to encourage the educational growth of new students enrolled in the Vocal Program at MI. Twelve HCCCF Vocal scholarships will be awarded in Spring 2012 to students (US or non-US citizens) enrolling in the Associate of Arts in Performance (Vocal) program who enter with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 (or better) and can clearly articulate their goals as a vocalist (see essay instructions below).
The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the Vocal performance program only, and may not be transferred to “non- performance program” emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA degree.
Eligibility
Eligibility is determined by a combination of academic standing (minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75) and the quality and content of the scholarship essay (described below).
To be considered for a HCCCF Vocal Scholarship, you must take the following steps:
- Complete a HCCCF Vocal Scholarship application (see application download instructions below).
- Submit a 250 word essay explaining why you should be considered for a HCCCF Vocal Scholarship. Include your long and short-term goals and any other factors you consider relevant. Essays that exceed the 250 word limit will not considered.
- Submit a copy of your official high school or college transcript.

The David Geffen Foundation Scholarship, sponsored by The David Geffen Foundation, is awarded to students currently enrolled full time in the Certificate in Music Business program, in a Music Business emphasis within an AA Degree, or the Music Industry Studies minor within the BM Degree.

- Be currently enrolled full time in the Certificate in Music Business program, in a Music Business emphasis within an AA Degree, or the Music Industry Studies minor within the BM Degree.
- Complete a David Geffen Foundation Scholarship application (see application download instructions below). Eligibility is determined by a combination of demonstrated financial need, academic standing (minimum GPA of 3.0) and the quality and content of the scholarship essay (described below).
- Submit a 250-word essay explaining why you should be considered for the David Geffen Foundation Scholarship. Include your goals, financial situation (including the amount of tuition credit requested), and any other factors you consider relevant.
Award
Tuition credit based on student need and available funds.
